All TC-W3 Two Cycle Oils Are Not Created Equal

In 2002, I purchased a custom built 29’ Sea Vee Vessel powered with twin 225 HP Yamaha two stroke EFI Saltwater Series outboards. I had previously owned six other boats over the years but this was the most impressive rig yet. I was also purchasing what was considered to be a quality TC-W3 rated two cycle oil by the cases from a nationwide major marine retailer. I, like many consumers, figured that if the oil that I purchased was TC-W3 rated, it must provide the lubrication and protection necessary to provide years of trouble-free operation.

My father, a former licensed aviation technician and engine builder for offshore race boats was already utilizing AMSOIL synthetics in all his automotive and marine applications. My father suggested I should do the same to increase longevity of the engine and fuel efficiency for my Yamaha Outboards. At the time, I believed it was difficult to justify the price difference since I utilize so much oil each season. Shortly thereafter, I had an intermittent issue with my port engine stalling. I learned that Yamaha had some issues with oxygen sensors so I gave that a try. When I removed the sensor and saw the carbon build up in the port engine oxygen sensor, I was extremely concerned. Flashbacks on the benefits of synthetic lubricants began to haunt me since I refused to believe. My research revealed that two cycle outboards are prone to piston ring jacking which means that carbon builds up behind the piston ring potentially creating catastrophic engine damage. This is mostly due to the negative effects associated with conventional TC-W3 rated oils and the higher temperatures in lean running engines. Conventional 2 cycle oils utilize zinc and phosphorus as the additives to lubricate. Unfortunately, zinc and phosphorus naturally create carbon deposits which is why outboard manufacturers suggest utilizing additives like Ring Free and Rejuvenate to remove carbon created from the their approved conventional TC-W3 rated oils. AMSOIL synthetic hp injector 2 cycle oil is produced with both Group IV PAO synthetic base stock and Group V esters. Group V esters burn off in the combustion process and leave virtually no trace of carbon. Group IV PAO and Group V esters are the highest level of synthetic lubrication and dramatically outperform Group II base stocks utilized in most 2 cycle oils.

AMSOIL hp injector oil has low aquatic toxicity which means it is environmentally friendly.  Hp injector oil is a precise synthetic formulation that exceeds the lubrication demands of modern two-cycle motors. Hp injector is a premium lubricant engineered with AMSOIL synthetic base oils and MAXDOSE advanced additives. It contains up to 30 percent more additives than other TC-W3 two-cycle oils for “super clean” operation. AMSOIL synthetic oils are more durable, they are perfect for lean mixture operations. In addition, this AMSOIL product produces low smoke and odor properties, making it ideal for boats. Hp injector oil reduces wear, has excellent lubricity properties and provides a good lubricating oil film, protecting pistons and bearings. AMSOIL synthetic hp injector oil also protects against rust, an important feature where motors are subjected to water.

AMSOIL also performed a field study with Sea Tow utilizing a pair of new Evinrude 250 HP   E-TEC’s in the lean setting. AMSOIL hp injector synthetic oil was put in one motor while Evinrude XD100 oil was put in the other. After 500 hours of operation and towing, the engines were torn down and evaluated. The wear ratings were a 0 percent rating in the cylinder wall area indicating that both oils provided statistically equivalent wear protection. AMSOILfully supports the use of AMSOIL hp injector in place of Evinrude XD100 oil in the E-TEC lean engine setting.

AMSOIL synthetic hp injector 2 cycle oil is priced less than most premium synthetics on the market @ approximately $ 25.00 per gallon wholesale pricing. Most synthetic two cycle oils on the market are priced from $39.99 to $49.99 per gallon. Most of those synthetic oils are also the conventional Group III base stocks marketed in the United States as synthetic, synthetic blend or semi synthetic.
